Photos 10 - Rhythm

Shoot three purposeful images this week. Post them on your blog by Saturday. Your photos should show 1) Fast Rhythm, 2) Slow Rhythm, 3) Irregular. Review the explanation from the book to ensure you are doing this correctly. Include a brief artist’s statement with each photo. Include a explanation of how you achieved the visual element that shows your understanding of the material. (Also, Why did you take this photo? What was your intention? To start off, I decided to have all my pictures in B&W to draw more attention to what I was trying to show (rhythm-wise). I also took all the pictures in the same location to try and show how different rhythm is able to be found in the same space and how you just need to be aware of what the rhythm is. SQ9: Activism

Learning about the uses of new media in activism today has expanded the way I think about how how using these various forms lend themselves fan activism and participatory politics. In Jenkins’ article, we read about the way activist groups take popular or commonly known media or stories and adapt them to a current social event. For example,dressing up in Avatar costumes and blue skin was taken as a symbol showing some sort of repression or injustice. Now, looking at the meaning of the two terms above, fan activism and participatory politics, we see that these imply active engagement. One, through the commonality of a known source that already acts as a connection between many people. The other, the verb itself--participatory politics is pretty much what it states: being active in some sort of politic. Your photos should show 1) Desaturation, 2) Saturation, 3) Monochromatic color. Do not rely solely on post-processing (editing) to achieve this. Include a brief artist’s statement with each photo. Include a explanation of how you achieved the visual element that shows your understanding of the material. (Also, Why did you take this photo? What was your intention? Why, specifically, did this image speak to you? Do you believe you were successful? Why or why not?). These photos should be carefully considered, composed and executed. Incorporate the principles we are reading about. Ideally they will hint at a story and evoke an emotion in a single frame. Remember: Using the visual element is good, but using it in meaningful conjunction with a subject—especially to draw out drama—is better.
