Shoot three purposeful images this week. Post them on your blog by Saturday.
Your photos—all extreme close ups—should show 1) Affinity of shape, line, tone, or color; 2) Contrast of shape, line, tone, or color; and 3) Ambiguous space
Include a brief artist’s statement with each photo. Include a explanation of how you achieved the visual element that shows your understanding of the material. (Also, Why did you take this photo? What was your intention? Why, specifically, did this image speak to you? Do you believe you were successful? Why or why not?).
These photos should be carefully considered, composed and executed. Incorporate the principles we are reading about. Ideally they will hint at a story and evoke an emotion in a single frame. Remember: Using the visual element is good, but using it in meaningful conjunction with a subject—especially to draw out drama—is better.
With this first image, I sought out to find a spot of land that had a similar "color palette". I wanted to show how the land and swing sort of blend into each other. I really like this picture, I think the only downside was that the snow added some contrast of color to the natural earth tones.
I had a lot of fun trying to decide what to photograph for contrast. I decided on this nutcracker because I could use it to show contrast of color quite easily, but since I got the lighting right, I was also able to show contrast of tone from background to subject.
This third image is supposed to show ambiguous space. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to capture this, and I don't think I did a very good job. Ambiguous space is supposed to leave you wondering where you are, and I tried to add some "confusion" with the clashing lines and showing a big of MG and BG, but I don't think it worked.
Hey really nice images here. I think you've got what you were going for in the first two pretty well. I agree on the third image that the space isn't quite ambiguous, maybe a canted angle would make a difference? I like the composition and earthy pallet in the first image but I almost wish we could get tighter still. I like the quality of all of these images. Some really nice work.
ReplyDeleteHey Mars, I think your photos are really beautiful and they all have a really strong story and emotion behind them. The first one is kind of nostalgic and reminds me of your 'evoking childhood' piece. The second photo has a very creepy vibe to it which is amplified by the fact that I find nutcrackers super creepy. It almost seems like a dark Christmas horror movie. Finally, the last one utilizes horizontal lines really nicely and again, the golden light on the tree trunk is so beautiful.
